frugal mom asked:
If the kids ask for money instead of gifts at birthdays or the holidays, do you give it to them? If they get money do you let them decide how to spend it?

What the heck happened to the days of “It’s the thought that counts”?

Only for birthdays. Not for Christmas. My older son wanted money instead of a party or a gift. WE gave him money and he still has it and saved more (it almost tripled). His b-day was in February. My children receive $10/week each. They both have chores, but I tell them that what we give them on Fridays is not for doing their chores or for being excellent in school. It’s so they learn how to make good decisions when it comes to spending money. How can you learn, if you don’t have any? At this point, my older son doesn’t spend his money at all. The younger one holds on to his money as long as he can, but then he spends it on a toy. Before he used to spend it right away. Both of them used to. I know the younger one will get there, too. My husband opened an account for both of them when each of them was a baby and deposits money for each every month. That money doesn’t ever get touched. My hope is that when they are ready to leave the nest (that’s when that money will be given to them), they will prove that they learned how to deal with money by spending the money we saved for them wisely.
